Oct 23rd, 2018
The Idea Foundry houses makers of all kinds. Within our walls, we see everything from small tech startups to practicing fine artists. This week we are thrilled to highlight the stained glass artist and Maker extraordinaire Kara O'Dea. Kara has been a pivotal part of the Idea Foundry community, helping us develop our glass cutting demos and creating phenomenal stained glass art classes. Explore Kara's work as a glass artist through her Instagram @karaomakesthings.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE IDEAFOUNDRY?
I started at the Idea Foundry as an intern shortly after I graduated from BGSU with my glass blowing degree, and this year I started teaching here. I’ve really enjoyed introducing so many people, both staff and students, to stained glass and working in a place with such a wide variety of materials being used. The opportunities for collaboration are endless, which is so exciting.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING/LIVING IN COLUMBUS?
Columbus is unique, it’s small enough to foster a supportive art community and large enough to provide opportunities for its artists. Gallery and studio owners are accessible and willing to speak to emerging artists, small businesses commission and consign our work, and the audience is large enough to make those partnerships truly beneficial.
IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY ONE PERSON WHO WOULD IT BE?
I think I’d like to have dinner with Laura Donefer, not only because her work is beautiful and skilled, but because she’s so vibrant and in love with glass and color.
WHAT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR COMPANY WOULD YOU LIKE THE IDEA FOUNDRY COMMUNITY TO KNOW?
A lot of people picture church windows when they think of stained glass, and I love to show people how to bring it into more modern times. It doesn’t have to be ornate windows or even windows at all!
