If you're ever working late at the Foundry, and catch the dim glow of a laptop from the crows nest, or hear the low rumble of gin-infused laughter, it is surely our Founder, Business Development, and Chief Mischief-Maker Alex Bandar. While his daily responsibilities are to guide the mission and direction of the Idea Foundry, his true calling is uniting us all through community, and a shared passion for making. And, after all, nothing builds connection or brings people together quite like a little shenanigans. There is no doubt that behind the glow of that laptop, and inside that laughter, there is a mischievous plan hatching. From human bowling to the creation of a multifaceted collaborative environment for exploring, learning & making, Alex Bandar is the big idea man.
Meet Alex Bandar...
Q: Why do you do what you do?
A: I am the founder of the Idea Foundry. That means that I manage the strategy and direction of the business, help inform the values and vision of our culture, and work closely with our other C-suite (Matt and Casey). It's hard work but lots of fun! I do this because I'm an engineer, and used to work in a manufacturing software business helping companies build products. But when I discovered the Maker Movement, and how barriers to creating things have plummeted over the last ten years, I realized that actually what I'm passionate about is helping everyday folks realize their ideas - whether they're art projects, retail products, innovations, or just passions they've wanted to explore. In this day and age it's easier than ever to do this, and helping people follow their creative, technical, or entrepreneurial dreams is extremely gratifying to me.
Q: What's the best advice you've ever received?
A: Colin Powell has a list of great management tips. (Link: http://govleaders.org/powell.htm). One of them is: "Never let your ego get so close to your position that when your position goes, your ego goes with it."
Q: Tell us something you are proud of...
A: I'm enormously proud of my family (my mother, my father, my sister, my brother) for being able to reinvent themselves as life evolves around them. Hugely inspiring to me!
Q: List 5 things you LOVE
- Great conversation with friends over food and drink
- Relishing a challenge
- The Venture Brothers
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: I'd like to be a motorcycle mechanic :-)
