Intro to 3D modeling for 3D printing: Turn your ideas into reality using Blender

Use Blender 3D modeling software to create a model ready for printing your own creation in this digital design class!

Blender is a powerful free open source 3D modeling software. You'll start the class with a quick overview of 3D printing processes and 3D modeling software options, then you will proceed to create your own 3D model, and adjust the design for 3D printing.  You'll finish the class with a 3D model of your own creation ready for 3D printing.

What You'll Make

  • You'll create a 3D model part using blender 3D.

  • Evaluate the model for 3D printing and finish the class with a model ready to print.

Bring your own laptop with an external mouse (three button preferred--you will NOT have a great experience trying to use your touchpad alone for this design software) and Blender pre-installed (link below).
If you don't have a laptop, you may use one of our Linux lab desktop computers with Blender pre-installed. There may be slight variations between Linux and Mac or Windows versions of Blender.

Computer literacy is expected (please know how to use your own computer!) but experience in Blender is not required.  Familiarity with basics of 3D printing is beneficial, but not required.

About the Instructor:
Carlos Sapene has extensive 3d modeling design experience.  He has been working in rapid prototyping, 3d modeling design and manufacturing for the last 18 years. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters Degree in Engineering Management. He is currently leading a Design and Development team for a local injection molding company.
